BMI Prime is a ratio. A value of 1.00 equals the selected BMI reference; 1.20 is 20% above it and 0.80 is 20% below it.
How BMI Prime works
BMI Prime = BMI ÷ the selected upper reference BMI. With the commonly used reference of 25, a BMI of 30 produces a BMI Prime of 1.20. The ratio is dimensionless and can make relative comparison easier.
The optional reference of 23 is included because lower BMI action points are sometimes applied to certain populations. Selecting it does not determine which guideline is medically appropriate for you.
Limitations
BMI-based measures cannot distinguish muscle from fat, describe fat distribution, or account fully for age, pregnancy, ethnicity, disability, or medical history. BMI Prime should be interpreted as a screening ratio, not a diagnosis.
Frequently asked questions
Why is 25 the default reference?
It is the widely used upper boundary of the standard adult “normal” BMI range. Individual guidance may differ.
What does BMI Prime 1.00 mean?
Your BMI exactly equals the selected upper reference BMI.
Can athletes use BMI Prime?
The calculation works mathematically, but high muscle mass may make BMI-based interpretation less useful.
Is this for children?
No. Children and adolescents need age- and sex-specific growth-chart assessment rather than adult BMI Prime.
