How to measure your waist

1. Find the midpoint
Locate the midpoint between the bottom of your lowest palpable rib and the top of your hip bone.
2. Keep the tape level
Stand relaxed and place a flexible tape horizontally around your waist without compressing the skin.
3. Read after breathing out
Take the measurement after a normal breath out. Repeat it if the tape moved or twisted.

What your ratio means

Waist-to-height ratio equals waist circumference divided by height. For adults with a BMI below 35, it can complement BMI by indicating how much size is carried around the abdomen.

A practical public-health message is to keep your waist below half your height. Adult screening ranges commonly classify 0.40 to 0.49 as healthy, 0.50 to 0.59 as increased central adiposity, and 0.60 or higher as high central adiposity.

Why is there no sex selection?

Unlike several waist-circumference and waist-to-hip benchmarks, the common half-your-height message uses the same 0.50 action point for adult men and women.

Can I use inches instead of centimeters?

Yes. The ratio is identical when the waist and height use the same unit. The calculator converts both measurements when you change units.

Who should ask for individual guidance?

General ranges may not apply during pregnancy, for children, when BMI is 35 or higher, or when a health condition changes height or abdominal size. A clinician can choose a more appropriate assessment.
