What lean body mass means

Lean body mass is body weight minus stored body fat. It includes muscle, bone, organs, body water, and other non-fat tissue, so it is not the same as skeletal muscle mass.

Why several formulas are shown

Boer, James, and Hume use height, weight, and sex-based coefficients. Their results can differ because each equation was developed from different samples. Comparing them gives a reasonable range, not a clinical measurement.

Which result should I use?

Use the average only as a general estimate. If you know a reasonably measured body-fat percentage, the direct result may be more personal, but it still depends on the accuracy of that measurement.

How can body composition be measured?

Methods include DXA, air-displacement plethysmography, underwater weighing, bioelectrical impedance, and skinfold measurements. Each has practical limitations and different levels of precision.

Can this calculate medication doses?

No. Medication dosing requires the exact method specified by a clinician or pharmacist. Do not use a consumer calculator to change a prescribed dose.
