| Height cubed | 5.359 m³ |
| Formula | weight ÷ height³ |
This calculator uses the adult SI formula. Neonatal and pediatric ponderal indices use different conventions and must not be interpreted with this result.
How the Ponderal Index works
The adult formula is weight in kilograms ÷ height in metres³. Unlike BMI, which divides weight by height squared, the Ponderal Index uses the cube of height. It has been used in anthropometric research to describe weight relative to stature.
Because height is cubed, even a small height-entry error can noticeably change the answer. Measure height without shoes and use a reliable scale for weight.
Important interpretation note
There is no universal adult category system that applies equally to every age, sex, population, or body type. The index does not distinguish fat, muscle, bone, or fluid, and should be viewed as a mathematical comparison rather than a diagnosis.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ponderal Index the same as BMI?
No. BMI uses height squared, while the adult Ponderal Index uses height cubed.
Can I use pounds and inches?
Yes. The calculator converts pounds and inches to kilograms and metres before applying the SI formula.
Is this suitable for newborns?
No. Neonatal calculations commonly use birth weight in grams and length in centimetres with a different scale. Use clinical guidance for infants.
Does it measure body fat?
No. It uses only height and weight and cannot separate fat mass from lean mass.
