Fence Picket Calculator to estimate picket count, spacing, board waste, material cost, and preliminary fence picket project total.
Home & Construction Calculators
Calculate fence pickets from fence length, picket width, gap, waste, price, and labor.
Use actual installed picket width and gap. Add gates, corners, rails, posts, caps, stains, fasteners, and special cuts separately.
About the Fence Picket Calculator
This fence picket calculator estimates effective picket coverage, picket quantity, waste-adjusted order quantity, and preliminary picket material cost for a straight fence run.
Formula and assumptions
Effective coverage = picket width + gap. Picket count = fence length converted to inches ÷ effective coverage, rounded up. Waste is applied before the purchase quantity is rounded.
Worked example
A 100-ft fence using 5.5-in pickets with a 1/8-in gap needs about 214 pickets before waste. With 10% waste, plan for 236 pickets. Actual corners, gates, end cuts, and picket styles can change the order.
Measurement checklist
- Use actual picket coverage width.
- Confirm the installed gap and fence length.
- Include gates, corners, and end cuts.
- Check picket height, rails, posts, caps, and fasteners.
Manual calculation steps
- Add picket width and gap.
- Convert fence length to inches.
- Divide length by effective coverage.
- Round up the base picket count.
- Apply waste and round up again.
- Multiply by price and add labor.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use nominal picket width?
No. Use the actual face width that will cover the fence, together with the planned gap.
Why does the gap matter?
Every gap reduces the number of pickets needed for a fixed fence length. It also affects privacy and appearance.
Does this include rails and posts?
No. Estimate posts, rails, concrete, gates, caps, and hardware separately or include them in labor and supplies.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring picket gaps.
- Using nominal rather than actual width.
- Forgetting gates and corner cuts.
- Leaving out rails, posts, and hardware.
