Deck Board Calculator to estimate board count, linear decking, waste, deck surface area, and material cost.
Home & Construction Calculators
Calculate how many deck boards you need from deck dimensions, board width, board length, gaps, waste, and price.
Use actual board dimensions and include borders, picture framing, stairs, angled cuts, and supplier availability separately.
About the Deck Board Calculator
This deck board calculator estimates surface area, effective board coverage including gaps, linear decking required, adjusted waste quantity, number of boards, and material cost.
Formula and assumptions
Effective coverage = actual board width + gap. Board rows = deck width converted to inches divided by effective coverage, rounded up. Boards per row = deck length divided by board length, rounded up. Total boards = rows × boards per row, then waste is applied and rounded up.
Worked example
A 20-ft by 12-ft deck using 5.5-in boards with a 1/8-in gap and 20-ft boards needs about 27 boards after 10% waste. Actual cuts, borders, stairs, and defects can change the final order.
Measurement checklist
- Measure every deck section separately.
- Use actual board width, not nominal size.
- Confirm board length and supplier stock.
- Include borders, picture framing, stairs, and angles.
Manual calculation steps
- Add board width and gap for effective coverage.
- Divide deck width by effective coverage.
- Divide deck length by board length.
- Multiply rows by boards per row.
- Apply waste and round up.
- Multiply boards by price.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use nominal board width?
No. Use the actual installed coverage width, including the planned gap.
Why do I need waste?
Waste allows for cuts, defects, damaged boards, angled sections, borders, and layout changes.
Does this include framing?
No. Joists, beams, posts, footings, stairs, rails, and hardware need separate estimates.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring board gaps.
- Using nominal instead of actual width.
- Forgetting border and stair boards.
- Rounding down the final order.
