How this CD calculator works
A certificate of deposit is a fixed-term deposit that may earn interest at a stated rate. This calculator projects a fixed-rate balance over the term you enter. It can also estimate tax on interest and a possible early-withdrawal penalty.
What is the difference between APY and APR?
APY expresses the annual yield after compounding. A nominal APR is a rate before compounding is included. For an APR quote, this calculator applies interest at the compounding frequency you select. For APY, it uses the annual effective yield directly.
How is interest compounded?
For an APR quote, the nominal annual rate is divided into the selected compounding periods. For an APY quote, the effective annual growth rate is applied over the time period. The schedule displays estimated monthly or yearly changes.
How is estimated tax calculated?
If selected, tax is estimated as your entered percentage of positive interest at maturity. This is a simplified estimate and does not model annual tax payments, account-specific tax treatment, or local tax rules.
How is the early-withdrawal penalty estimated?
The penalty is modeled as the amount of interest the initial deposit would earn over the penalty months at the entered rate, capped at the available balance. Actual CD agreements may use a different formula or apply other conditions.
What assumptions should I check with the bank?
Confirm whether the advertised rate is APY or APR, how often interest compounds, whether interest is paid out or reinvested, the maturity date, renewal terms, fees, taxes, and any early-withdrawal penalty. This page does not show live rates or promise a return.
