Army Body Composition Calculator

Estimate the current U.S. Army waist-to-height ratio assessment using height and waist circumference in either metric or US units.

Enter measurements

Use a level tape across the belly button. Keep the abdomen relaxed and do not compress the skin.

How the current Army assessment works

The ratio equals waist circumference divided by height, using the same unit for both measurements. Under the 2026 Army policy, a ratio below—but not equal to—0.55 meets the body-composition benchmark. Age and sex do not change this threshold.

Important policy change

The Army replaced the former height-and-weight tables, multi-site tape test, one-site body-fat equation, and supplemental body-composition assessments with the waist-to-height ratio. This page therefore prioritizes the current method instead of presenting a retired tape-test result as official.

Where should the waist be measured?

Measure around the abdomen at the level of the navel. Keep the tape horizontal and snug without pulling it into the skin. Official assessments follow prescribed procedures and may repeat the measurement.

What happens at 0.55?

A ratio of 0.55 does not meet a standard requiring a result less than 0.55. Official policy provides for a same-day confirmation assessment when the initial result is 0.55 or greater.

Is this an official determination?

No. This is an independent educational calculator. Only an authorized Army assessment and current directive determine official status.
