A Body Shape Index (ABSI) Calculator

Calculate ABSI from height, weight, and waist circumference. Compare the result with BMI and see how a small waist-measurement change affects the index.

Your measurements

Measure the waist with a flexible tape held level and without compressing the skin. Use the same technique when tracking changes.

A Body Shape Index

0.0779

ABSI is a dimensionless body-shape index.

Body mass index 24.2
Waist-to-height ratio 0.471
Waist 1 cm smaller 0.0769
Waist 1 cm larger 0.0789

A raw ABSI value should not be interpreted as an individual diagnosis. Research comparisons often standardize it for age and sex using population reference data.

How ABSI is calculated

The formula is waist circumference ÷ (BMI2/3 × height1/2), with waist and height in metres and weight in kilograms. BMI is calculated first from weight ÷ height².

ABSI was developed to describe abdominal body shape with less dependence on height, weight, and BMI than waist circumference alone. Studies have examined associations between ABSI and population-level health outcomes, but the usefulness of any single value varies across populations and individuals.

Best measurement practices

  1. Measure without bulky clothing.
  2. Keep the tape horizontal and comfortably snug.
  3. Repeat the measurement and use a consistent anatomical location.
  4. Compare trends using the same method rather than overinterpreting one reading.

Frequently asked questions

Does ABSI replace BMI?

No. ABSI incorporates BMI and waist circumference. It is an additional research-oriented index, not a replacement for a complete health assessment.

Why is there no universal risk label?

Age- and sex-standardized ABSI scores require an appropriate reference population. A raw value alone does not support a universal personal-risk category.

Can children use this calculator?

This page uses the adult ABSI formula. Children and adolescents should use age-appropriate professional assessment.

Can athletes rely on ABSI?

Body-shape indices may not reflect muscle distribution or individual physiology. Athletes should interpret them cautiously and alongside other measures.
