Body Adiposity Index Calculator

Body Adiposity Index Calculator

Estimate body adiposity from height and hip circumference without using body weight, and see how measurement variation affects the result.

Your measurements

Measure the hips around the widest portion of the buttocks with the tape level.

BAI is an indirect research estimate—not a direct measurement of body-fat percentage and not a diagnosis.

How Body Adiposity Index works

BAI uses the formula hip circumference in centimeters ÷ height in metres1.5 − 18. It was proposed as an estimate of body-fat percentage that does not require a scale.

The ±1 cm comparison shows how a small difference in hip measurement can change the result. For consistent tracking, use the same tape, position, posture, and measurement technique each time.

Is BAI more accurate than BMI?

Not consistently. Later validation research found that BAI was not generally more accurate than BMI, waist circumference, or hip circumference. Treat both BAI and BMI as imperfect screening estimates rather than direct body-composition measurements.

Can BAI diagnose obesity?

No. BAI does not have universally accepted diagnostic thresholds across ages, sexes, ethnic groups, and clinical populations. A qualified professional may use validated measurements and your broader health information.

Why does the calculator not ask for weight or sex?

The original BAI equation uses only hip circumference and height. Adding other inputs would create a different model rather than the published BAI formula.
