Mulch Calculator to estimate mulch volume, cubic yards, bag quantity, waste, and preliminary landscaping material cost.
Home & Construction Calculators
Calculate mulch quantity from bed length, width, depth, bag or bulk yield, waste, price, and delivery.
Use the supplier’s actual bag yield or bulk cubic-yard unit. Add separate allowances for slopes, tree rings, borders, paths, access, and removal of old mulch.
About the Mulch Calculator
This mulch calculator estimates surface volume in cubic feet and cubic yards, adjusted material volume, purchase units, and preliminary material and installation cost.
Formula and assumptions
Volume = length × width × depth in feet. Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Adjusted volume applies waste. Purchase units = adjusted volume ÷ unit yield, rounded up.
Worked example
A 20-ft by 10-ft bed covered with 3 inches of mulch contains 50 cubic feet, or 1.85 cubic yards. With 10% waste, plan for 55 cubic feet. At 2 cubic feet per bag, purchase 28 bags.
Measurement checklist
- Measure irregular beds in smaller sections.
- Use finished grade and planned depth.
- Confirm bag size or bulk delivery unit.
- Include slopes, tree rings, borders, and access.
Manual calculation steps
- Convert depth from inches to feet.
- Multiply length × width × depth.
- Convert cubic feet to cubic yards.
- Apply waste for uneven areas and handling.
- Divide by unit yield and round up.
- Add delivery, labor, and old-mulch removal.
Frequently asked questions
What mulch depth should I use?
Use the depth recommended for the landscape and material. Avoid piling mulch against tree trunks, siding, foundations, or stems.
Should I order bags or bulk mulch?
Compare actual unit yield, delivery minimums, access, and the ability to spread the material on site.
Does this calculate color or nutrient needs?
No. Mulch type, color, decomposition, and soil needs should be chosen for the plants and site.
Common mistakes
- Using inches as feet.
- Measuring an irregular bed as one rectangle.
- Ignoring settling and waste.
- Piling mulch against trunks or structures.
