Mulch Cost Calculator

Mulch Cost Calculator to estimate mulch volume, purchase units, material cost, delivery, labor, and total landscaping project cost.

Home & Construction Calculators

Build a mulch budget from bed dimensions, depth, unit yield, waste, material price, and installation costs.

Compare bagged and bulk pricing using actual unit yield and delivery minimums. Add removal, edging, access, slopes, and special landscape work separately.

About the Mulch Cost Calculator

This calculator estimates mulch volume, cubic yards, purchase units, material cost, delivery, spreading labor, and preliminary landscaping project total.

Formula and assumptions

Volume = length × width × depth in feet. Adjusted volume applies waste. Units = adjusted volume ÷ unit yield, rounded up. Total cost = units × material price + delivery + labor.

Worked example

A 20-ft by 10-ft bed at 3 inches deep contains 50 cubic feet. With 10% waste, purchase 28 two-cubic-foot units. At $5 each, plus $75 delivery and $120 spreading labor, the preliminary total is $335.

Cost checklist

  • Compare mulch type and color prices.
  • Check bag yield or bulk cubic-yard quote.
  • Include delivery minimums and access.
  • Add removal, edging, and spreading labor.

Manual calculation steps

  1. Calculate bed volume.
  2. Apply waste for uneven areas.
  3. Divide by the supplier unit yield.
  4. Round units up.
  5. Multiply by material price.
  6. Add delivery, labor, and site extras.

Frequently asked questions

Is bulk mulch cheaper than bags?

It can be, but compare actual volume, delivery, access, spreading effort, and minimum order size.

Does spreading labor include old mulch removal?

No. Add removal, disposal, edging, or preparation costs separately.

Does this include landscape fabric?

No. Fabric, edging, plants, soil amendments, and irrigation should be estimated separately.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing bags without converting their yield.
  • Forgetting delivery and minimum orders.
  • Ignoring uneven beds and waste.
  • Leaving out spreading or removal labor.
