Social Security Calculator

Compare two U.S. Social Security retirement claiming options using the monthly benefit estimates shown in your Social Security statement or the official SSA estimator. Explore how your selected life expectancy, cost-of-living adjustment, and investment return change the projected totals.

Use estimates from your Social Security record. This tool does not calculate or verify Social Security eligibility or benefit amounts. Enter the monthly retirement estimates provided by the Social Security Administration for each claiming age. Use the same dollar basis for both amounts. If your estimates already include future inflation, set the cost-of-living adjustment assumption to 0% to avoid counting it twice. This comparison is for educational planning only.

How this Social Security comparison works

Enter the monthly retirement benefit estimates for two claiming ages from your Social Security statement or the Social Security Administration’s estimator. The calculator starts each option when the selected claiming age is reached, applies the annual adjustment assumption if selected, and totals monthly benefits through the age you choose.

If you choose to model investing the benefits, each monthly payment is assumed to be invested and compounded monthly using your entered annual return. The result does not account for taxes, changes in law, spouse or survivor benefits, Medicare premiums, work-related earnings limits, or individual investment fees and risks.

Where do I get Social Security benefit estimates?

Use your official Social Security Administration benefit calculators or statement. Enter the estimated monthly amounts for the two claiming ages you want to compare. SSA tools may present estimates in today’s or future dollars; use a consistent basis for both options and avoid applying an additional COLA if the values already include projected inflation. This calculator does not derive amounts from earnings history.

Does this tell me the best age to claim?

No. It compares two scenarios under the assumptions you provide. It cannot determine the right claiming age for your health, household, work plans, taxes, or survivor needs. Consider speaking with a qualified financial professional for personalized advice.

Does this calculator apply Social Security rules outside the United States?

No. It is designed for U.S. Social Security retirement benefit estimates. Other countries use different public pension and retirement systems.

Important: Educational estimate only; not financial, tax, legal, or benefits advice. Confirm current benefit estimates and rules with the Social Security Administration.
