Ring Size Calculator

The Ring Size Calculator converts finger circumference, ring diameter or a known US size into approximate US, UK, EU and Japanese ring sizes. Measure carefully, compare the result with the jeweler’s chart and allow for temperature and band width.

How to use the Ring Size Calculator

  1. Select the measurement you know.
  2. Enter the finger circumference, ring diameter or US size.
  3. Calculate to see international equivalents.
  4. Repeat the measurement and confirm against the seller’s chart.

How to measure ring size

For circumference, wrap a narrow non-stretch paper strip around the base of the finger. Mark where the ends meet, lay the strip flat and measure the length in millimeters. It should sit securely without squeezing. String can stretch, so paper or a flexible measuring tape is usually more consistent.

For diameter, choose a ring that already fits the intended finger and measure straight across the widest inside opening. Do not include the metal edges. A ruler can give a rough value, while calipers generally provide a more precise inside diameter.

Finger size can change during the day. Cold conditions may reduce the measurement and heat or exercise may increase it. Measure near the end of the day at a comfortable room temperature. If the knuckle is much wider than the finger base, select a size that can pass the knuckle without becoming loose.

Ring Size Calculator formula and method

The Ring Size Calculator first converts every measurement to inside diameter in millimeters. Circumference and diameter are related by the circle formula:

diameter = circumference ÷ π
circumference = diameter × π

Inches are converted using 1 inch = 25.4 millimeters. The estimated US size is matched to the nearest standard half size from US 3 through US 13. EU sizing is commonly based on inner circumference in millimeters. UK letters and Japanese numbers are approximate equivalents because charts and manufacturing tolerances vary.

Worked example

A finger circumference of 54.4 mm gives an inside diameter of approximately 17.32 mm. The nearest standard match is US size 7, approximately UK N, EU 54 and Japan 13. The diameter is about 0.68 inches.

Why the result is an estimate

Two rings labeled with the same nominal size can fit differently. Wide bands often feel tighter than narrow bands, ring profiles vary, and international conversion charts use slightly different rounding. Treat the result as a starting size and use a jeweler’s sizing set when accuracy is critical.

Choosing between two ring sizes

If your measurement falls between half sizes, consider the band design and how the finger changes during the day. A wider band may justify the larger option. A thin band may feel comfortable at the nearer size. Rings with a large top can rotate when too loose, while eternity bands can be difficult to resize.

For gifts, measure an existing ring from the same finger whenever possible. Left and right hands may differ, and a ring that fits the index finger usually will not fit the ring finger. Professional sizing is recommended for valuable, custom, engraved or difficult-to-resize jewelry.

Frequently asked questions

These answers explain common Ring Size Calculator questions.

Is ring size the same worldwide?

No. The US uses numbers, the UK uses letters, EU sizes often follow circumference in millimeters, and Japan uses another numeric scale.

Should I measure the finger or a ring?

Either method works. Measuring a well-fitting ring’s inside diameter is often easier if it was worn on the same finger.

How tight should the measurement be?

It should feel secure but still pass over the knuckle. Do not pull paper or tape so tightly that it compresses the skin.

Does a wide band need a larger size?

Often yes. Wide bands contact more skin and can feel tighter, so many jewelers recommend a slightly larger size.

Can I use this for children?

The math works for any valid measurement, but the supported standard table begins near US size 3. Children should be measured professionally for safety and fit.
