Estimate mortar volume, bags, material cost and total project cost for masonry work. Enter wall dimensions, joint factor, waste, bag yield and local pricing.
Formula and worked example
Wall volume = length × height × thickness. Mortar required = wall volume × joint factor × (1 + waste). Bags = mortar required ÷ bag yield, rounded up.
For a 20 × 8 ft wall that is 8 in thick, the base masonry volume is 106.67 ft³. A 12% joint factor and 10% waste produce the mortar estimate shown above. Bag yield and price should come from the product you plan to buy.
Planning guidance
Measure openings separately when they are significant, use consistent units, and compare the calculator result with the supplier’s coverage chart. Buy whole bags from the same product line because mix proportions and yield differ. This estimate is for planning and does not replace project specifications or a professional mix design.
FAQs
What joint factor should I use?
Use the project specification or supplier recommendation. Joint size and masonry unit dimensions can change the percentage substantially.
Can this replace a mix design?
No. Follow the required mortar type, strength, proportions, curing and weather guidance for your project.
