How to use this credit card payoff calculator

Add each card’s current balance, minimum monthly payment, and annual percentage rate (APR). Set a monthly budget that covers at least the sum of the minimum payments, then choose avalanche or snowball and calculate. Add more rows for additional cards.

Debt avalanche and debt snowball

Both approaches pay at least the stated minimum on active cards and direct the remaining budget to one priority card at a time. Avalanche targets the highest APR first and can reduce interest under the calculator’s assumptions. Snowball targets the smallest balance first, which may make progress easier to see. Choose the method you can follow consistently, and keep making required minimum payments.

How the estimate is calculated

Each month, estimated interest is added using the card APR divided by 12. The calculator then applies minimum payments and directs remaining budget to the selected priority. It repeats until balances reach zero or the schedule reaches its safety limit. The resulting schedule is an estimate: card issuers may use daily balances, changing rates, fees, different minimum-payment formulas, or other terms.

Frequently asked questions

What if my budget is less than the card minimums?

The calculator will ask you to increase the budget. Paying less than required minimums can result in fees and other account consequences; contact your card issuer if you are having trouble making payments.

Does it include new purchases or late fees?

No. It assumes no new transactions, fees, or changes to APR during the payoff period. Add those costs separately when planning.

Can I pay more than my budget in the final month?

No. The final payment is capped at the amount needed to clear the remaining balances and interest, so the schedule does not overstate the last payment.
