How to use the auto lease calculator

Enter the negotiated vehicle price, residual percentage, and lease term. Use the rate type quoted to you: enter an APR percentage or the money factor as a decimal, such as 0.00250. Add any down payment, trade credit, capitalized fees, and tax rate that apply to your estimate.

How is a lease payment estimated?

The calculator estimates the residual value from MSRP and the residual percentage. It subtracts the residual from the adjusted capitalized cost and divides the difference across the lease term to estimate monthly depreciation. A monthly finance charge is estimated from the adjusted capitalized cost, residual value, and money factor. Entered tax is then added to the base payment.

Estimated base payment = monthly depreciation + monthly finance charge

Monthly finance charge = (adjusted capitalized cost + residual value) × money factor

APR and money factor

Lease quotes may show a money factor instead of an APR. This calculator converts APR to an approximate money factor by dividing the percentage rate by 2,400. For a money factor input, the approximate APR equivalent is the factor multiplied by 2,400. This is a comparison convention; confirm how the lessor presents its rate and charges.

What does due at signing include?

This estimate includes the entered down payment, upfront fees, and the first monthly payment. Capitalized fees are added to the lease balance and affect the estimated monthly payment. Contract charges, registration, deposits, and taxes may differ from this simplified estimate.

Does the down payment reduce the total lease cost?

It reduces the amount used in the monthly payment estimate, but it is still money paid by you. Compare total due at signing and total payments, not just the monthly figure.

Is the residual value the same as the car’s market value?

No. The residual is the value used in the lease contract at the end of the term. Actual market value may be higher or lower, and the contract determines any purchase option.

Is the mileage charge exact?

No. It is a planning estimate based on the annual distance and per-mile charge you enter. Your contract may use different allowance periods, charges, rounding, or other return conditions.
