Estimate adult kidney filtration with the race-free 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation. Enter a laboratory serum-creatinine result, age, and sex. This educational estimate must be interpreted with clinical history and urine testing.

Your estimate
Many laboratories report values at or above 90 differently. A clinician should interpret trends, symptoms, medications, hydration, muscle mass, uACR, and other findings.
How this GFR estimate is calculated
The calculator uses the adult 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation, which does not include race. It combines serum creatinine with age and sex-specific constants and reports an estimate normalized to 1.73 m² body surface area.
eGFR is an estimate—not a direct measurement. It may be less reliable during rapidly changing kidney function, pregnancy, extremes of muscle mass or diet, amputation, severe illness, or use of medicines that affect creatinine.
General eGFR categories
| Category | eGFR | General description |
|---|---|---|
| G1 | 90 or higher | Normal or high range |
| G2 | 60–89 | Mildly decreased range |
| G3a | 45–59 | Mildly to moderately decreased |
| G3b | 30–44 | Moderately to severely decreased |
| G4 | 15–29 | Severely decreased |
| G5 | Below 15 | Kidney-failure range |
Categories alone do not diagnose chronic kidney disease. Duration and markers such as urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) matter.
Frequently asked questions
Can one eGFR result diagnose chronic kidney disease?
No. Clinicians generally assess persistence over time and other evidence of kidney damage. An isolated result can change with illness, hydration, medicines, or laboratory variation.
Why is urine albumin testing important?
uACR can detect albumin leakage and adds information about kidney damage and risk that eGFR alone cannot provide.
Is this calculator suitable for children?
No. Pediatric eGFR uses different equations. This calculator is intended only for adults aged 18 or older.
