How the Dice Roller Calculator works
The Dice Roller Calculator generates one whole number for every virtual die. Each possible face has the same chance of appearing. For a standard six-sided die, every result from 1 through 6 has a probability of 1 in 6. When several dice are rolled, the calculator adds their values and then applies the selected modifier.
Minimum total = number of dice + modifier
Maximum total = number of dice × sides + modifier
The result panel lists every individual die so you can check the subtotal. It also shows the theoretical minimum and maximum for the selected dice and the arithmetic average of the current roll. Recent results remain visible until the history is cleared or the page is refreshed.
Dice probability and expected value
A fair die gives each face an equal chance. The expected average for one die with s sides is (s + 1) ÷ 2. Therefore, two d6 dice have an expected subtotal of 7, while three d8 dice have an expected subtotal of 13.5. An expected value is a long-run average, not a guarantee for a single roll.
| Die | Possible results | Average roll |
|---|---|---|
| d4 | 1–4 | 2.5 |
| d6 | 1–6 | 3.5 |
| d8 | 1–8 | 4.5 |
| d10 | 1–10 | 5.5 |
| d12 | 1–12 | 6.5 |
| d20 | 1–20 | 10.5 |
| d100 | 1–100 | 50.5 |
Totals are not equally likely when multiple dice are combined. With two d6 dice, a total of 7 can occur in six different ways, so it is more common than 2 or 12, which each have only one combination. The distribution becomes more concentrated near the middle as more dice are added.
Dice Roller Calculator example
Suppose a game requires 3d6 + 2. Select three dice, choose d6 and enter a modifier of 2. If the individual dice show 4, 2 and 6, the subtotal is 12 and the final total is 14. The possible final range is 5 through 20 because the lowest dice subtotal is 3 and the highest is 18.
Common uses for a virtual dice roller
This Dice Roller Calculator supports tabletop role-playing games, board games, classroom probability demonstrations, writing prompts and quick random decisions. The d20 is common in role-playing games, percentile checks often use d100, and d6 dice are widely used in family games and educational activities.
A digital roller is useful when physical dice are unavailable or when many dice must be totaled quickly. The individual-results display keeps the calculation transparent, while the history helps groups review recent outcomes. For regulated gambling, competitions or security-sensitive random selection, use an approved system and official rules rather than a casual browser tool.
Fairness and randomness
The calculator uses the browser’s built-in cryptographic random-number generator when available. The MDN Web Docs guide to cryptographic random values explains this browser feature. The calculator falls back to the standard browser random function only when necessary. Each generated value is mapped uniformly to the chosen number of sides. Although this is suitable for games and learning, no browser dice roller should be treated as certified gambling equipment.

Frequently asked questions
Can I roll more than one die?
Yes. Enter any whole number from 1 to 20, then choose the number of sides for every die.
What does 3d6 mean?
It means roll three six-sided dice and add the three results. A notation such as 3d6 + 2 also adds a modifier of 2.
Are the dice results random?
Yes. Every click creates a new independent set of random values within the selected range.
What is a dice modifier?
A modifier is a fixed number added to or subtracted from the sum of the dice. It does not change the faces rolled.
Why are middle totals more common?
With multiple dice, more combinations produce totals near the center than totals at the minimum or maximum.
Can I download my result?
Yes. Use Download PDF to print or save the page, or Download Excel to export the latest roll as a CSV file that opens in spreadsheet software.

Dice Roller Calculator example
Rolling two six-sided dice with a +4 modifier produces totals from 6 to 16. The average expected total is 11, although each Dice Roller Calculator result is random. Use the roll history to review individual dice and repeated outcomes.
