Use either distance covered in 12 minutes or the time required to complete 1.5 miles.
Your estimate
Estimated VO₂ max
Calculated from 2,400 metres in 12 minutes.
How the estimate works
For the Cooper test, VO₂ max is estimated from the distance covered in 12 minutes: (distance in metres − 504.9) ÷ 44.73. For the 1.5-mile test, the calculator uses 3.5 + 483 ÷ time in minutes.
Field tests are useful for tracking repeated performance under similar conditions, but weather, terrain, pacing, fatigue, altitude, and measurement accuracy can change the result.
Getting a more consistent result
- Use the same flat track or course each time.
- Test in similar weather and at a similar time of day.
- Avoid testing when ill, injured, unusually fatigued, or dehydrated.
- Repeat after several weeks rather than chasing daily changes.
Frequently asked questions
What does VO₂ max measure?
It describes the maximum rate at which oxygen can be used relative to body mass during intense exercise. This page estimates it from running performance.
Is a smartwatch result the same?
No. Watches use proprietary models involving pace, heart rate, and other data. Different methods can produce different estimates.
Can I walk the Cooper test?
You may walk or combine walking and running, but the equation was designed around maximal distance performance and may be less informative at very low intensities.
Cardiovascular safety note
This is a vigorous field test, not a medical test. Do not attempt it without medical clearance if you have chest pain, fainting, uncontrolled blood pressure, known heart or lung disease, or a clinician has advised exercise restriction. Stop immediately for chest discomfort, severe breathlessness, dizziness, faintness, or unusual symptoms and seek appropriate care.
