How this fiber estimate works

The calorie method uses the dietary guideline of 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories. The adult reference method uses 25 g/day for women ages 19–50, 21 g/day for women 51+, 38 g/day for men ages 19–50, and 30 g/day for men 51+.

These are planning references, not personal prescriptions. Needs can differ with total food intake, pregnancy, medical conditions, medications, and clinician-directed diets.

Ways to reach your target

  • Choose beans, lentils, vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts, and seeds.
  • Increase fiber over time rather than making a large jump in one day.
  • Drink fluids as appropriate for you, especially while increasing fiber.
  • Check nutrition labels and compare serving sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Is more fiber always better?

No. A very rapid or excessive increase may cause gas, bloating, discomfort, diarrhea, or constipation. Increase gradually and use a target that fits your health needs.

Does this calculator include children?

No. The reference-table method is for adults age 19 and older. Children, teenagers, pregnancy, and breastfeeding have different reference values.

Should I use total fiber or added fiber?

Track total dietary fiber from foods and supplements. Whole foods also provide nutrients and varied types of fiber.
