Calculate your assignment grade
How the Assignment Grade Calculator works
The Assignment Grade Calculator adds bonus points to points earned and then applies an optional late penalty. The adjusted points are divided by the total possible points and multiplied by 100. A zero penalty leaves the earned score unchanged.
Assignment percentage = adjusted points ÷ points possible × 100
Worked example
An assignment earns 42 of 50 points with 2 bonus points and a 10% late penalty. The pre-penalty total is 44 points. After the penalty, the adjusted score is 39.6 points, producing 79.20%.
Bonus points and late penalties
Bonus points may allow a result above 100%. Some instructors cap the final percentage, while others allow extra credit to raise the course grade. A late penalty can be applied to earned points, total points, or percentage points depending on the syllabus. This calculator applies the selected percentage to earned points plus bonus points.
| Situation | How this tool handles it |
|---|---|
| No bonus | Enter zero bonus points |
| No late penalty | Enter 0% |
| Extra credit above maximum | Results may exceed 100% |
| Percentage-point deduction | Subtract separately after calculation |

Using the result in a course grade
An individual assignment percentage is not necessarily the same as the overall course grade. The assignment may belong to a homework category or have a specific course weight. Use the Grade Calculator to combine it with exams, projects, and other work.
