How the Grade Calculator works

This weighted grade calculator multiplies each assessment score by its percentage weight, then adds the contributions. For example, an 80% exam worth 40% contributes 32 percentage points to the course grade.

Formula

Weighted course grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights). If you enter points, the score is first calculated as points earned ÷ points possible × 100.

Example

A student earns 85% on homework worth 30%, 78% on a midterm worth 25%, and 92% on a project worth 45%: (85×0.30) + (78×0.25) + (92×0.45) = 86.4%.

Letter grade reference

Letter Typical percentage GPA reference
A 90–100% 4.0
B 80–89% 3.0
C 70–79% 2.0
D 60–69% 1.0
F Below 60% 0.0

Schools use different cutoffs, plus/minus boundaries, and weighting policies. Treat the letter shown as a common reference and compare it with your syllabus.

Frequently asked questions

What if my weights do not add to 100%?

The calculator normalizes the entered weights so you can calculate a current grade while some course components are still missing. The result also shows the total weight entered.

Can I use points instead of percentages?

Yes. Enter points earned and points possible for each assessment; the calculator converts each row to a percentage before applying its weight.

Does this calculate the final exam score I need?

This tool calculates your current weighted grade. Use the Final Grade Calculator to find the score needed on a remaining exam for a target course grade.
