About the Grass Seed Calculator
This grass seed calculator estimates lawn area, adjusted seed quantity, whole bags to purchase, seed cost, soil preparation, and labor or delivery. It supports new lawns, overseeding, patch repair, and preliminary landscaping budgets.
Formula and assumptions
Area = length × width. Base seed = area ÷ 1,000 × seed rate. Adjusted seed = base seed × (1 + waste ÷ 100). Bags = round up adjusted seed ÷ bag size. Total cost = bags × price per bag + preparation + labor and delivery.
Worked example
For a 20 ft × 12 ft lawn, the area is 240 ft². At 5 lb per 1,000 ft², the base seed need is 1.20 lb. With 10% waste, plan for 1.32 lb. A 20 lb bag rounds the purchase quantity to 1 bag. At $40 for seed, $100 preparation, and $75 labor or delivery, the estimated total is $215.
Measurement checklist
- Measure irregular lawns as several rectangles.
- Subtract patios, beds, paths, and other areas not being seeded.
- Confirm the label rate for your grass variety and application.
- Calibrate the spreader before covering the lawn.
- Prepare soil, spread evenly, rake lightly, and water as directed.
Manual calculation steps
- Calculate each lawn section and add the areas.
- Convert the area to thousands of square feet.
- Multiply by the product seed rate.
- Apply the waste allowance.
- Divide by bag weight and round up.
- Add seed, preparation, labor, delivery, and tax costs.
Common mistakes
- Using a new-lawn rate for overseeding or vice versa.
- Ignoring bag size and rounding down.
- Seeding over hard, compacted, or poorly graded soil.
- Failing to water after application.
Frequently asked questions
What seed rate should I use?
Use the rate on the seed label. New lawns often require a different rate from overseeding, and grass species vary.
Why add a waste allowance?
Small overlaps, uneven spreading, edge trimming, birds, patching, and reseeding can increase the amount needed.
Can one bag cover the whole lawn?
Compare the adjusted pound requirement with the bag size. The calculator always rounds up to whole bags.
Should soil preparation be included?
Yes, preparation can include grading, loosening, topsoil, compost, and removing debris. Enter your estimated preparation cost.
