Roof Shingle Calculator

Roof Shingle Calculator to estimate roof area, roofing squares, shingle bundles, waste allowance, material cost, and total project cost for asphalt shingle roofing.

Home & Construction Calculators

Calculate shingles and costs from the sloped dimensions of one or more identical roof planes.

Enter actual sloped roof dimensions. Measure different roof planes separately when their dimensions are not identical.

About the Roof Shingle Calculator

This roof shingle calculator estimates asphalt shingle quantities from the actual sloped area of the roof. It reports net roof area, adjusted area after waste, roofing squares, whole shingle bundles, material cost, and an estimated project total. Editable bundle coverage and pricing make the estimate useful for comparing products and supplier quotations.

Formula and assumptions

Net roof area = roof-plane length × sloped width × number of identical planes. Adjusted area = net area × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100). Roofing squares = adjusted area ÷ 100 because one roofing square equals 100 ft². Bundles required = adjusted area ÷ coverage per bundle, rounded up to the next whole bundle. Material cost = bundles × price per bundle. Project total = material cost + labor, delivery, and extras.

Worked example

For two roof planes measuring 30 ft by 15 ft, the net roof area is 900 ft². Adding 10% waste gives 990 ft², or 9.90 roofing squares. At 33.3 ft² per bundle, the project requires 30 whole bundles. If each bundle costs $40 and labor, delivery, and extras total $1,500, the estimated project total is $2,700.

Measurement checklist

  • Measure along the roof slope from eave to ridge, not the horizontal building width.
  • Measure each rectangle, triangle, dormer, valley, and extension separately when needed.
  • Confirm the printed coverage of the exact shingle bundle.
  • Use a waste allowance suitable for roof complexity, valleys, hips, and cutting.

Manual calculation steps

  1. Calculate the sloped area of every roof plane.
  2. Add all plane areas to obtain the net roof area.
  3. Multiply by one plus the waste percentage.
  4. Divide adjusted area by 100 for roofing squares.
  5. Divide by bundle coverage and round up.
  6. Multiply bundles by price and add other project costs.

Frequently asked questions

How many bundles are in one roofing square?

Many common asphalt shingles use about three bundles per square, but architectural and specialty products vary. Use the coverage printed on the selected bundle.

Does roof pitch affect the estimate?

Yes. This calculator expects actual sloped dimensions. If you only know horizontal dimensions and pitch, calculate the sloped roof area first.

Are underlayment, nails, flashing, and ridge caps included?

No. The bundle result estimates field shingles only. Add underlayment, fasteners, flashing, starter strips, ridge caps, ventilation, disposal, permits, and repairs separately.

Common mistakes

  • Using horizontal footprint area instead of sloped roof area.
  • Assuming every shingle bundle covers exactly one-third of a square.
  • Forgetting dormers, valleys, hips, starter courses, or ridge caps.
  • Rounding before adding the waste allowance.
