Home & Construction Calculators
Use this sod calculator to estimate lawn area, sod rolls or pallets, waste allowance, material cost, soil preparation, labor, and total installation cost.
About the Sod Calculator
This sod calculator estimates the lawn area, adjusted sod requirement, whole purchase units, sod material cost, soil preparation, and installation or delivery cost. It works for rectangular lawn sections and is useful for homeowners, landscapers, and preliminary project budgets.
Formula and assumptions
Base area = length × width. Adjusted sod area = base area × (1 + waste ÷ 100). Purchase units = round up adjusted sod area ÷ coverage per unit. Total cost = sod units × unit price + soil preparation + installation and delivery.
Worked example
For a 20 ft × 12 ft lawn, the base area is 240 ft². With 10% waste, order 264 ft². At 32 ft² per unit, round up to 9 sod units. At $28 per unit plus $250 soil preparation and $120 installation or delivery, the estimated project total is $622.
Measurement checklist
- Divide L-shaped or irregular lawns into rectangles.
- Confirm whether the supplier quotes rolls, slabs, pallets, or square feet.
- Measure and remove patios, beds, paths, and other excluded areas.
- Prepare and level soil before delivery.
- Install promptly and water according to the sod supplier’s guidance.
Manual calculation steps
- Calculate every lawn section area.
- Add the sections and subtract excluded areas.
- Apply the waste allowance after calculating net area.
- Divide by supplier coverage and round up.
- Add sod, soil preparation, labor, delivery, and tax costs.
Common mistakes
- Using gross property dimensions instead of lawn area.
- Ignoring supplier coverage differences.
- Ordering too little for cuts and curved edges.
- Letting sod dry out before installation.
Frequently asked questions
How much waste should I add?
About 5–10% is common for straightforward lawns; irregular shapes, slopes, and many seams may require more. Confirm with the installer.
Does the calculator estimate pallets?
It estimates whole sod purchase units. If a supplier sells only pallets, divide the unit result by the pallet quantity and round up again.
Why does soil preparation matter?
Removing debris, grading, loosening, and adding soil or compost can affect both the final cost and how well the sod roots.
When should sod be installed?
Arrange delivery close to installation and keep the sod cool and moist. Follow local weather and supplier recommendations.
