Roof Sheathing Calculator

Roof Sheathing Calculator to estimate sloped roof area, plywood or OSB sheet quantities, waste allowance, material cost, and total roof-deck project cost.

Home & Construction Calculators

Calculate roof sheathing sheets and costs from one or more identical sloped roof planes.

Enter actual sloped roof dimensions. Sheet thickness, panel rating, edge support, expansion gaps, fastening, and orientation must follow plans, code, and manufacturer requirements.

About the Roof Sheathing Calculator

This roof sheathing calculator estimates plywood or OSB panels for simple roof planes. It reports net sloped area, adjusted area after waste, coverage per sheet, base sheet quantity, whole sheets to purchase, material cost, and an estimated project total.

Formula and assumptions

Net roof area = roof-plane length × sloped width × number of planes. Sheet coverage = sheet length × sheet width. Base sheets = net area ÷ sheet coverage, rounded up. Adjusted area = net area × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100). Purchase sheets = adjusted area ÷ sheet coverage, rounded up. Material cost = purchase sheets × price per sheet. Project total = material cost + labor, delivery, clips, and extras.

Worked example

Two roof planes measuring 30 ft by 15 ft have a net area of 900 ft². Standard 4 × 8 sheets cover 32 ft² each, so the base quantity is 29 sheets. Adding 10% waste gives 990 ft² and 31 whole sheets to purchase. At $28 per sheet plus $1,200 in related costs, the estimated project total is $2,068.

Measurement checklist

  • Measure along the roof slope rather than using horizontal run.
  • Measure unequal planes, dormers, valleys, and extensions separately.
  • Confirm actual panel dimensions and required edge gaps.
  • Choose waste for roof complexity and the planned sheet layout.

Manual calculation steps

  1. Calculate the sloped area of each roof plane.
  2. Add plane areas for the total net roof area.
  3. Multiply sheet length by sheet width.
  4. Divide net area by sheet coverage for base sheets.
  5. Add waste, divide again, and round up.
  6. Multiply purchase sheets by price and add other costs.

Frequently asked questions

Should roof sheathing be installed horizontally or vertically?

Orientation depends on panel rating, framing spacing, edge support, and approved construction details. Follow the structural plans and panel manufacturer’s instructions.

Does the estimate include H-clips and fasteners?

No. The sheet count estimates deck panels only. Add clips, blocking, fasteners, adhesive, underlayment, delivery, and disposal separately.

Why can the actual sheet count be higher?

Valleys, hips, dormers, staggered seams, damaged panels, required gaps, and inefficient cut layouts can increase the quantity.

Common mistakes

  • Using building footprint instead of sloped roof area.
  • Ignoring required expansion gaps and edge support.
  • Using the wrong thickness or span rating.
  • Rounding before the waste allowance is applied.
